Three Things You Need To Know About Making Decisions
Posted: Feb 09 2014
Have you ever had a hard time making choices? Do you constantly feel stuck between a rock and a hard place? Or between Chinese and Mexican? Whether you're deciding on what to have for dinner or what to do with your life, here's what you need to know about making decisions.
* Not deciding is a decision. It's a hard truth, but one we all need to accept. When we don't make a decision, we've made a decision. And that decision is usually the easy way out, which always leads to less. The best things in life come when you make the hardest decisions. But many of us don't like making hard decisions, so we back away, and in doing so, decide. Let me put it this way--if you have put that diet off for months and months because you don't like making tough decisions, you inadvertently decided to hold on to the extra pounds. If you have put off making the decision to take your family on vacation, you've made a decision--to stay at home. These aren't the truths we like to accept, but only when we accept hard truths about our reality can we ever get in a position to change it!
* Avoiding pain can lead to more pain. One reason we don't like making decisions is because we desperately want to avoid pain. But avoiding pain can actually lead to more pain. If you don't make decisions, life will make them for you; and life doesn't give a rat's patootie about your welfare. Let's take your finances for example. One reason we avoid coming to terms with our debt situation or establishing a budget is because we want to avoid the pain of knowing how much we owe or the pain of cutting back on our purchases. But this same avoidance is going to lead to a much greater pain later. Have you ever had your home foreclosed on? Yeah, then you know what I'm talking about! Opt for the lesser pain now and enjoy the pleasure of living with the results later.
* Real decisions are defined by action. Every New Year's Eve, millions of people make decisions. There's only one problem, though. They hardly ever follow them up with action. A true decision is marked by action. If you don't take action, the decision was just a weak little prayer without enough gumption to make it lift off the ground. Decisions happen when you take a distinct step down a specific path and rule out all other options, regardless of your present circumstances or how you feel about your present circumstances. You put it all to the side, you make a decision, and you take action in that direction.
There's one more thing I want to share with you about decisions...
You've got to make them!
Back in Biblical times, Elijah got fed up with people who wouldn't make decisions. And he had no problem telling tehm about it. 1 Kings 18:21 tells us, "Elijah came near to all the people and said, How long will you halt and limp between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow Him! But if Baal, then follow him. And the people did not answer him a word."
What did the people do? They didn't answer him a single word! In other words, they made a decision at that point to not make a decison. Quit halting and limping through life. If there is a decison that needs to be made in your life, whether it's about your health, your finances, your home, whatever, MAKE IT! And take action in that direction.
Now the ball's in YOUR court. What decision do you need to make today? I want to challenge you to make that decison and take action toward it. Comment below and share with me the decison you made and the action you are going to put toward it. I want to encourage you and lift you up in prayer today!
